Aliso Beach in 1910

I'm baffled by the fake Palm trees in this photograph. Were they put there by a developer trying to sell the area? Were they put there by the photographer to add interest to the photo? Could they be leftover from an early movie shot or remains of a wild beach party maybe? Who knows?
